Essential Fencing Equipment
Starting fencing doesn't require an immediate large investment — most clubs loan equipment to beginners. But once you're training regularly, owning your own gear improves hygiene, comfort, and performance. Here is a complete breakdown of what you need.
1. Fencing Mask
The mask is your most critical piece of safety equipment. It protects your face and neck with a steel mesh bib and padded interior. Masks are weapon-specific in competition (different ratings for foil/sabre vs épée) but general training masks are available. Look for at minimum a 350N rated mask for training.
2. Fencing Jacket
The jacket covers the torso and sword arm. It must be made of puncture-resistant material. Jackets for foil and sabre must include a half-plastron (an extra layer under the sword arm). For épée, a standard jacket is sufficient. Beginners should look for 350N jackets.
3. Fencing Glove
A single glove covers the sword hand. It protects against blade contact and — in foil and sabre — forms part of the electrical circuit for scoring. Make sure you buy the correct hand (right or left).
4. Underarm Protector (Plastron)
Worn under the jacket on the sword arm side, the underarm protector adds an extra layer of protection in the armpit area. This is mandatory in competition and strongly recommended for training.
5. Fencing Breeches
These are knee-length trousers made of protective material. Combined with long socks pulled up to meet the breeches, they cover the legs. Some beginners substitute thick tracksuit bottoms initially, but proper breeches are significantly safer.
6. The Weapon
Your blade, handle, and guard will depend on which discipline you fence. Beginners typically start with a practice/training weapon before investing in a competition-grade setup. Key components:
- Blade — the flexible steel blade
- Guard (bell guard) — protects the hand
- Handle/grip — pistol grips are easiest for beginners; French handles offer more blade feel
- Pommel — secures the handle
7. Electric Equipment (for Competitive Fencing)
When you begin competing, you will also need:
- Body wire (connects weapon to scoring box)
- Lame (conductive jacket — required in foil and sabre)
- Electric mask (required in sabre)
- Electric weapon with tip/point
Beginner Budget Tip
Start with a complete starter kit that includes mask, jacket, glove, underarm protector, and a weapon. These sets are significantly better value than buying items separately and include everything you need to train safely from day one. Browse our starter kits at klothomaiafencing.com.
