Why Equipment Maintenance Matters
Fencing equipment is an investment. A well-maintained jacket, mask, and weapon can last for years; neglected gear deteriorates quickly and can become a safety risk. Good maintenance habits also reduce costs over time and ensure your equipment always performs reliably.
Cleaning Your Fencing Jacket and Breeches
Protective clothing absorbs sweat during every training session and must be washed regularly. Check the care label — most modern fencing jackets can be machine washed at 30°C or 40°C. Turn garments inside out before washing to protect the outer surface, and use a gentle detergent without bleach or fabric softener. Never tumble dry — heat degrades the protective fibers. Air dry flat or hanging instead. Do not iron directly over the protective material. Wash your jacket after every 2 to 3 training sessions at minimum.
Cleaning Your Fencing Mask
Wipe the inside padding with a damp cloth after each use. Remove the inner lining if detachable and wash it separately. Check the mesh regularly for dents, cracks, or gaps — a damaged mesh must be replaced immediately. The bib should be inspected for tears or worn areas. Store the mask somewhere it will not be crushed, as the shape of the mesh matters for safety.
Blade Care
After training, wipe the blade with a dry cloth to remove moisture and prevent rust. Apply a light coat of oil periodically if storing for extended periods. Check for blade straightness regularly — a bent blade affects accuracy and is a safety risk.
Point and Tip Maintenance
Inspect the point screw and tip before every session — a loose tip can fly off during a bout. For electric weapons, check that the tip spring provides sufficient resistance and registers correctly on the scoring machine. Replace worn or cracked tips immediately.
Body Wires and Connectors
Coil wires loosely and never wrap them tightly around your hand, as this weakens the internal wiring over time. Test connections before competition — a faulty wire can cost you points. Store wires in a dry location away from direct sunlight.
Storage Tips
Store your equipment in a ventilated bag or case. Avoid leaving gear in a hot car or damp environment — heat and moisture accelerate deterioration. A dedicated equipment bag with separate compartments for the mask, weapon, and clothing keeps everything organized and extends the life of each item.
